Schicht-Werk · Quantum-Werkstatt v0.3 · October 2026

Quantum physics
on the workbench.

An open NV-diamond line from a cooperation of four workshops in Vienna. Grown stepwise, each level sellable on its own, each documented and repairable. From a €350 school kit to a research-grade setup. Open hardware. No promises we can't keep.

§ 01 / Steps

The staircase — five steps, no leap

The Quantum-Werkstatt grows step by step. Each step funds the next. The early steps are feasible with what Schicht-Werk already has — 43 printers, laser cutters, electronics. Later steps come once the earlier ones generate cash flow. No outside risk capital, no external pressure, no promise we can't keep.

1

Schicht-Werk Stegemann kit

The Bremen modular kit (Stegemann et al., Eur. J. Phys. 2023) rebuilt as a professionally manufactured Schicht-Werk edition. Peer-reviewed, Class-2 laser under 1 mW (school-safe), 3D-printed mechanics, ESP32 readout with custom software. Visible ODMR signal, Zeeman splitting, all four NV orientations measurable.

senseBox quantum module

Docking onto the senseBox platform — an ESP32-based sensor platform already deployed at 2,000+ German schools, museums, and makerspaces. Schicht-Werk manufactures the quantum extension module for teachers already familiar with senseBox. Pilot outreach to the Münster group (QOOOL Sensing) planned.

Open research kit

The real market gap: between open-source DIY (€500) and closed-source industrial (€15,000+) there is nothing. Schicht-Werk fills the middle with an open, documented, repairable box in the €1,500-3,000 range. Pulsed sequences, Rabi, Ramsey, Hahn echo. Undergraduate research courses.

Research-grade pulsed bridge

Comparable to spinEDU (Technion) or Yuan/Princeton — at a third of their price, and with open architecture. Single-NV experiments, dynamical decoupling sequences, quantum state tomography. Only once the first three steps generate cash flow.

DIY quantum computer (research goal)

The goal of the staircase. Multi-qubit register via NV electron spin coupled to ¹³C nuclear spins. Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm on NV diamond — as CIQTEK demonstrates commercially, but as a fully open hardware platform. Long-term research goal, not a promise for the coming years.

§ 02 / Position

Why a quantum workshop?

Schicht-Werk is a manufacturing workshop. We build what we can build, we build it openly, and we leave closed-source industry prices to those who want them. Three reasons this workshop line exists.

i

Openness as method

Schicht-Werk editions are CERN-OHL-S for hardware, AGPL for software. Schematics, Gerber files, firmware, BoM — all public. If the microcontroller board dies, anyone can repair it. This isn't a marketing virtue, this is workshop hygiene.

ii

The gap is real

Stegemann build instructions cost €250 as DIY. qutools quNV starts at an estimated €25,000. Nothing in between. That's exactly where Schicht-Werk can deliver a professionally manufactured, documented line — between hobbyist and university equipment.

iii

Staircase, not leap

We don't start with the €15,000 research kit. We start with the €350 Stegemann kit, which Schicht-Werk can produce within 4-6 weeks. Step one's revenue funds step two, step two funds step three. Growth out of our own strength, no investor pressure.

What we don't promise

We are not competing with Qnami, Quantum Brilliance, or Q.ANT. These companies deliver industrial quantum hardware from €40,000 to €100,000+ upward. We deliver teaching material and undergraduate research hardware for educational institutions and makers — the lower part of the pyramid.

We have not yet measured a v0.1 prototype. The Stegemann plans are peer-reviewed and replicable, but before Schicht-Werk sells, there will be a measured ODMR signal from a Schicht-Werk edition on the workbench. Only then.

We do not work for military or defense. Schicht-Werk has held this line from day one, it applies to the Quantum-Werkstatt as well. NV magnetometers have technical applications in GPS-denied navigation; we do not supply hardware for defense applications.

§ 03 / Network

Planned outreach

Schicht-Werk doesn't build in a vacuum. The Quantum-Werkstatt is meant to dock onto existing open-source projects, academic groups, and distribution networks — as complement, not as competition. Concrete conversations are pending.

Open-hardware partner

Quantum Village Inc.

Makers of Uncut Gem, the open-source NV magnetometer. Based in Delaware/London. Planned proposal: Schicht-Werk becomes the European fulfillment partner for Uncut Gem kits.

senseBox / QOOOL Sensing

University of Münster, QOOOL Sensing project. The senseBox is already deployed in 2,000+ German schools. Planned proposal: Schicht-Werk manufactures the quantum extension module for the senseBox distribution channel.

§ 04 / Contact

Let's talk.

Quantum-Werkstatt — if you want to build, buy, or pilot one of these steps.

We're four workshops in Vienna, not a pitch-deck startup. If you're a teacher looking for a pilot kit, if you sit at a university and need an affordable research lab, if you want an open-source partner for your quantum outreach — write to us. We answer in days, not quarters.

Write briefly and concretely: who you are, what you do, which step you see us in. We read everything, answer realistically.
